The following explanations were taken from Make Mead Like a Viking by Jereme Zimmerman.
Question 1: McGovern and his team have conducted in-depth microbiological analysis of fermented beverage residue on serving implements found in the graves of Bronze and Iron Age Nordic peoples (the probable ancestors to the Vikings).
Question 2: The clawbeaker is German in origin, but it was still very prevalent during the Viking and Anglo-Saxon periods.
Question 3: The drinking horn was particularly important to the Vikings and was often used in ceremonies. While most horns probably came from domesticated bovines, those obtained in the wild were a sign of hunting prowess.
Question 4: Patrick McGovern was able to deduce from his research that the grog technique was employed by many ancient cultures due to scarcity of sugar. Mixing fermented beverages derived from sprouted cereal grains helped with this sugar shortage since grain starches could be converted to fermentable sugars.
Question 5: The Vikings could have several different names, but it is indeed true, that the actual term refers to many different groups of explorers. The Vikings increased their numbers (primarily during the Anglo-Saxon era) from just a group of Scandinavians to include Celts, Russians, and various Germanic tribes.
