Jose Gomera of East Patchogue, New York, a member of the Long Island Beer and Malt Enthusiasts and Brewers East End Revival, won a bronze medal in Category 27: Fruit Beer during the 2023 National Homebrew Competition Final Round in San Diego. Gomera, along with co-brewer and sister Albania Morales, brewed a blonde ale with guava that was chosen third out of 144 entries in the category.
Gomera and Morales were trying to fine-tune the hops on what they considered to be a solid blonde ale recipe, and they decided to try for a fruit beer since it was springtime. The result is a creamy fruit beer with a blonde ale base that has just enough hop and guava character to keep it interesting and, most importantly, refreshing. As with prior versions of this blonde ale, Gomera and Morales named the recipe after a Blondie song.
