American wheat addition
« on: June 01, 2024, 09:03:44 am »
I bought some wheat dme to use on a lazy brewday. I don't want to leave it plain. Any suggestions? I've used coconut, cantaloupe, and blackberries in the past.

I've used Gooseberries from a friend's plant a few times in an American Wheat.  They gave a bit of a wine-like flavor and didn't get in the way of the crushability of the beer.  I really should try that again.

Good luck.

Got a farmer's market? Look for local tasty stuff.

Several years ago I made an American wheat with Jamaican tangelo peel. It's sometimes available in big box grocery stores under its commercial name uglifruit. It has a citrus punch flavor all on its own. It reminded me of drinking Five Alive as a kid in the 80s. One of my favorite fruit forward beers I've brewed.

Mango and habanero is a great mix for that style.

+1. Just look for what's in season locally.

I do a pineapple chipotle wheat that I love. 2 large cans of Dole Pineapple juice, and I smoke the jalapeños myself.
Don't judge a beer by it's cover.

If you can get something good, fresh, and local, then go with that. Otherwise, with summer around the corner I lean towards tropical and citrus. Guava, Mango, Lime zest, Passionfruit, etc.

If you decide to use Grapefruit, ensure you tell anyone you may serve it to. Some medications prohibit Grapefruit due to interaction.
