You realize you're obligated to give us day by day updates on The Life and Times of an Assistant Pro Brewer!
Yeah, you'll need a blog or something.

That's a thought. I'll put stuff on my personal site as it comes to me, and once I've been at it long enough to make mistakes I'll definitely share those. But if I put *everything* online I won't be able to write a book about how to become a pro brewer - which I'm pretty sure is the best way to make money as a pro brewer. ;D

Fantastic! Did you take beer to the interview?

Thought about it! I figured compared to what it costs to check a bag, they probably wouldn't care all that much about my beer. From now on, the only concern is how well I can brew *their* beer.

I forgot to put in a link. The site is: http://www.silvertonbrewing.com/ - And yes, a website overhaul will be among my first acts once I'm on payroll.

Anyway, thanks for the kind words, everyone. Free beer for anyone who comes to visit. Seriously. If you can actually get to Silverton it's the least I can do.

Silverton, Colorado! Cool!

Have you been to 10,000 feet before? Like skiing, fishing, hiking, biking, camping, hiking? You'll love it there.

We will definitely stop by on our next beercation.

And no excuse for missing the GABF next year.

Brew on, Tom

Should have read closer.  Silverton, CO.  Very scenic, and the air is thin there.  Get used to a low boiling temp!

I'll hopefully be skiing there this winter, so I'll take you up on that offer.  Always wanted to get down there again, and this is yet another perk along with the phenomenal snow!!

dont mean to pry here, but would you be willing to tell us what you're getting paid? I know alot of us would love to do something like this and we know the compensation isn't that great but it would be nice to have a better idea of what it is? I'm happy for you. Here's a discussion of wages from the Probrewer forum.  Much less than most people think...for a 600 bbl/year brewery, around $11-12/hr.

I'm not really comfortable going into specifics, but my pay will be about average based on threads at Probrewer (there are several going back a number of years). Basically, for a first job I wouldn't expect to start out much above minimum wage. Actually I feel pretty fortunate: my contract specifies a raise schedule that will have me making a little more than I would have expected after a while. That almost isn't the point for me right now, though. I really feel like it's a job I'm going to enjoy, and I'm lucky enough to be in a situation (no family) that allows me to walk away if I don't.

And yes, I'm completely stoked about living in SW CO. That's actually a pretty big perk for me. 30 minutes to Purgatory, walk out your front door and into National Forest, etc.

I'll hopefully be skiing there this winter, so I'll take you up on that offer.  Always wanted to get down there again, and this is yet another perk along with the phenomenal snow!!

Are you planning on going to Silverton Mtn? I consider myself a pretty good skier, but I don't think I'll be tackling that this first winter...
