Brewing a Rauchbier today, but rather than rauching it off my usual malty-malty base style of marzen or dunkel, I'm going more toward schwarzbier with a hint of roast in it.

There was a rauchbier in the Costco advent calendar that was really dark and slightly roasty, but still tasted "light" and I was impressed with how well they pulled it off, so I'm giving that a try.

Is that Costco advent pack pretty good? I wasn't familiar with any of the breweries (if I recall), so I wasn't sure if it was legit.
Don't judge a beer by it's cover.

Wellllll...  It was mostly Helles, which isn't really my thing.  Lots of light lagers.  That was disappointing to me, but I got it for half price and none of the beers were horrible, so it was ok I guess.  Given my preferences (maltier, heftier, darker/roastier, more esters e.g. English Ales) I am not the target beer-drinker for this product.  (I've never understood the affection for Pilsners, but apparently I'm a troglodyte.  I also prefer red wine over beer any day.  So, consider the source.)

There were a couple that I thought were outstanding.  The dunkelweisen was really lame compared to the ones I have made.

24 jumbo-sized cans, at $60 that may almost be a good price  IF you like light lagers.  I got it for $30 so I don't regret it, but I personally wouldn't pay $60 for it.  But you should probably get the opinion of someone who is normally into those styles of beer.

Brewed a Mixed Style Beer:

One day, you’ll wake up and there won’t be anymore time to do the things you’ve always wanted to do. Don’t wait. Do it now.

Edit: this beer scored a 35 at the AL Brewer’s Cup

I really like the Costco Advent calendar, but I love Helles and Pilsners. I do wish there were more dark beers in it. The German stout is excellent.

I changed it to an APL because I don’t think it’s hoppy enough to be an IPL

Brewing a sorta WCIPA no sparge.  Dunno why I don't do that more often.

10lb. Montana Craft Malt British Pale
7 lb. MCM Bavarian pils
1.6 oz. Columbus 60
1 oz. Cascade Cryo 5
4 oz. Blue Lake fresh frozen MI Chinook - WP @ 170 for 20

The Blue Lake hops are interesting https://bluelakehops.com/the-blue-lake-process/

I talked to those guys at the Pittsburgh HBC. They had some two year old hops that still smelled fresh picked.

Their website, the lack of details on their "Process®" in particular, gets my "this is a gimmick" spidey-senses tingling. If I had to guess, it sounds like these are simply flash-frozen wet hops. That's not to say that it wouldn't work, but it seems like it's a niche product to me at best. That's not to say it won't produce good beer. I'm curious to hear what your results are.

You should listen to the interview we did with them. I tried beer made with them and it was very good. Another tool in the toolbox.

How to get around this could be an issue: “Due to the prohibitively expensive shipping required to keep these frozen in transit, Blue Lake Hops are available for pickup only.”
