Double Drop
« on: August 25, 2022, 08:07:50 am »
I just double dropped my fermenting Festbier. My fermenter was full on brew day, so I started fermentation in the kettle and left it there for 3 days. Last night I poured the fermenting wort from the kettle to the fermenter. We’ll see how it turns out. I only did this because I wanted to brew before my fermenter was empty. But, I guess it’ll be a nice experiment.

The British did this back in the day to aerate the yeast after start of fermentation. I've done it for Bitters, but never a lager.

I’m living on the wild side on this one.

I drop approx 16 hours later, and airlock activity is seen shortly after.
3 days, hmm, are you seeing airlock activity ?

Thanks

Yes, I have lots of airlock activity. The beer was not at high krausen yet when I moved it from the kettle to fermenter (performed the drop). It had a krausen and was fermenting, but intensity had not peaked. Even now on day 5 it has only dropped from 1055 to 1024. Lagers are slower. That said yesterday air lock activity was up and pretty respectable for a lager fermentation.

Based on some of the dumb things I have done in the past, I am not too worried about hurting the beer. Once a few years ago I tipped the fermenter and poured completely fermented beer into a keg through a funnel. I was frustrated after a million clogs during transfer. I poured more than half, probably 3/4th of the beer, that way. I figured I might have ruined it, but the beer turned out great. I won’t try my luck with that one again though.

I know I am a little crazy at times, but to me, it’s just beer. I don’t take it so seriously. If I screw it up, I’ll try again.

This is a plot from my Tilt. I added an arrow to point to the time when the second drop occurred. You can see fermentation pace increased shortly after (within a few hours the slope changed significantly).  12-15 hours things went crazy (notice the bouncing pattern on the SG plot).  I think that instability reflects rapid fermentation.  The audible bubble rate also increased noticeably.

Good stuff :)
Any complaints with your tilt ?, tips/tricks.
Seriously considering getting one.

No complaints. I calibrated my tilt for both OG and FG. Event though the tilt is calibrated, I use my glass hydrometer to check OG before fermentation. The tilt matches within a point. I usually check the FG with a glass hydrometer also. The tilt is normally within 1-2 points of the hydrometer for SG.

I like tracking the progress with Tilt.

The tilt allows me to easily wait until the SG is steady for 3 days before kegging the beer. That gives a few days for diacetyl rest if needed and allows for pretty good flocculation.

Since bluetooth range is 25 ft, when checked the next day and phone is now within range,
would the tilt app on phone show the progress, or only a reading at that time ?

Wouldn't plan on using cloud, only the phone app.

Thanks

I solved the problem by getting a bluetooth repeater that I place outside the fermentation fridge in the basement. It’s signal is strong enough to reach up stairs where I leave my iPad on so it will log to Google Sheets. The Tilt doesn’t show progress. It sends a reading to a Google Sheets spreadsheet that logs each reading to show progress. When I want to ck progress I open Google Sheets anywhere in the world with an internet connection.

*Disclaimer*: Any comment I add is simply the way I brew beer. There are certainly other ways that can be equally effective which other brewers may contribute. This is what I’ve found that works for me using my equipment and processes so I offer this for your consideration. YMMV

Noticed tilt also sells a repeater meant for a SS fermenter.
Although not necessary to see the progress, it would be cool.
It would be fine with me, using it as a hydrometer only.

Since a hydrometer has never been used for brewing (gasp),
my standard 3 week fermentation time can be shortened :>
Bought one once, but it shattered on a concrete basement floor on initial use.

Making sure a V2 is purchased, it has twice the battery life.
Only decision left is color.

I have a Raspberry Pi 0W sitting 5-6 ft. from the fermenter. It logs to the Google spreadsheet and I can go to an internet URL to get the instant read. The instant read is only available on my home network.

So.....guess I missed the original post. WTF is double dropping?  I am well familiar with dropping. Are you dropping twice?
