This was a fermented beverage made from grains, but I doubt that we would recognize it as beer.

This is one of those articles where I wish the journalist had some knowledge of the subject matter. It would have been a more interesting article if the reporter knew to ask what kind of grains, were there any other ingredients like bittering herbs or spices, and so on.
