Mini Brew
« on: December 06, 2020, 11:00:35 am »
Hi. I am an extract brewer.  I usually brew 5 gallon batches.  Does anyone know if I cut my recipe in half, would that work ok?  I lost my refrigerator to the holidays (wife won ---I lost) and plan to usa a mini fridge.

Thanks.

Only thing to be aware of is your water and boil off rate. If you boil off a gallon in an hour for 5 gallons,  you will still boil off 1 gallon an hour (or possibly even a little more) for a half batch. Make sure you factor this in when calculating your boil and/or topoff water volume.

+1 on boiloff rate.  That's really going to be the only variable for you.
You can do a dry run or 2 just boiling some water to get an idea on what's going to work.  Concentrate on water volume vs how much heat you are applying.

This is one reason I LOVE electric brewing. I can control the heat application for predictable results.

+1 and even better mash control for non-recirc BIAB - no concerns about cold spots or too much heat too quickly- I just dial down the power and it holds with minimum cycling.
