Here is my setup, went with new energy efficient models and also went vertical for the obvious reasons,
The freezer to the right is a twin used as a fermentation chamber!

Very nice Norm!

I like how you have diamond plate backing the drip tray assembly.

So what are the obvious reasons for going vertical? I'm oblivious to the obvious...

Who is BF?  Because Benjamin Franklin never said that :)

I don't know the "obvious" reasons for going vertical either, I switched from vertical to chest freezer.  Ease of getting kegs into it?  That's the only thing I can think of.

Yup, ease of getting kegs in and out, less floor space, shelves for bottled beers and yeast!

My socks tell me a different story. Who was the first person to say that? I feel like this happens a lot- someone says something clever and then someone who is famous for being clever takes credit for it.

Your socks are liars.   ;D

The first person to say it was probably some marketing guy who said, "Hey, why don't we take something Benjamin Franklin said about wine, make it about beer, and print it on t-shirts [or socks :)].  I'll bet we could make a bunch of money that way!"

It comes from a letter he wrote to AndrĂ© Morellet in 1779.  In the letter, he said:
Quote
We hear of the conversion of water into wine at the marriage in Cana as of a miracle. But this conversion is, through the goodness of God, made every day before our eyes. Behold the rain which descends from heaven upon our vineyards; there it enters the roots of the vines, to be changed into wine; a constant proof that God loves us, and loves to see us happy.  The miracle in question was only performed to hasten the operation, under circumstances of present necessity, which required it.

Here is mine.

At some point I plan to put on a faux-granite top (my wife's idea) and route out the area where the drip tray is so it will sit flush.  I also plan to sheath it in oak.  One question for you guys that have covered yours in wood - did you glue the wood right to the outer walls of the freezer or did you use strip wood spacers?  I've been told conflicting warnings about overheating the unit.  Some say it needs air circulating b/w the walls and the wood, so leave some space. Others have told me just the opposite - that having air circulating b/w the walls and the wood would lead to overheating and I should glue the wood directly to the outer walls.  Which is correct?

After 7 years of having a freestanding kegerator in the laundry room, I was able to convince my wife to go with a more permanent solution.  When there's food on it, it's a dining room buffet.  Otherwise, it's the bar.  The old freestanding summit is now on lagering duty.

I've consumed all of my home brew and still can't relax!  Now what!

I'm gonna be ignorant and just believe that at some point Ol' Ben said something about beer being amazing. And that marketing guy was right because I definitely bought those socks because the quote was so cool (and they're nice bike socks).

I fully support you wallowing in your ignorance, as long as you know that's what you're doing.  ;) ;D
