Asheville, do not see any 2018 updates
« on: May 18, 2018, 11:25:22 am »
Going to be in Asheville starting Saturday the 26 for 5 nights with 2 teenagers. I know there have been several threads on Asheville, but nothing in the last couple months. If I only have 1 night to check out a couple breweries, what are the top choices that are also kid friendly? I like IPAs, stouts, and great lagers. No need for sours. What do you all have for me?

Fermenting: Nothing (ugh!)
Conditioning: Nothing (UGH!)
In keg: Nothing (Double UGH!)
In the works:  House IPA, Dark Mild, Ballantine Ale clone(still trying to work this one into the schedule)

Where are you staying? Does it need to be walkable?

I'd make sure you trek out to Mills River and see Sierra Nevada. As far as the rest I have not seen many breweries will teenagers milling around. Certainly New Belgium wouldn't have an issue AFAIK with them being in the taproom or the deck. If you go over there, then cross the river and go to Wedge as they would fit your IPA and Stout bill.

If you like more traditional, then go to Dirty Jacks beside Green Man. It is still Green Man, but not all artsy fartsy Modern. Since you are there, go to Burial and also hit Catawba. All the breweries on the South Slope are mere minutes apart by foot. You could swing over to Ben's Tune Up and have some of their house made beer or Sake. Just beside it is Hi-Wire who is making some great stuff. As you were walking there you could also check out Twin Leaf. Bharami isn't far away either and if you walk up the hill you could always visit One World located underneath Farm Burger.

Since it is a single night, just go to the South Slope. The kids could hang out at French Broad Chocolate, see movie, or just people watch and smell.

Not universally so, but on the South Slope:
Green Man is typically English Ales
Catawba is American Ales
Burial is Saison, Sour, Belgian, and American
Twin Leaf is American
Hi-Wire is American
Ben's Tune Up is sake (and it is good!)
Bharami is all over the place
ABC is American
One World is all over the place

Tasty Beverage is a beer store beside Twin Leaf with drafts

There is one there I haven't been to yet:
Eurisko

One World is all over the place

How is their quality lately?  Been there twice, and all over the place was a good description of not just the styles they brew.  But it's been a while since I've been to Asheville.  We called the place Underworld since that's what it felt like a few years ago. lol

Speaking of N.C. I will be in Greensboro for a wedding this weekend.  What's "not to be missed" brewery there?

I went to Highland last summer with my kids (age 14) and it was very kid friendly with food trucks outside along with good live music.

For Greensboro there are a bunch in the area and unfortunately many I have not yet visited:
Brown Truck is a little south in High Point

In GSO you have:
Gibbs Hundred
Preyer
Natty Greenes
Joymongers
Pig Pounders
Little Brother
Leveneleven
Bulgarian Brewing Co

Beer Co is downtown as well and Mellow Mushroom typically has a strong tap list.

If you can get in, go to a Hops Burger location.

Thanks for the tips.  The menu at Hops Burger looks great.
I'm not sure how much time we'll have, but we are staying downtown and there seem to be several recommended brewpubs there.

You can uber to Hops and back easily or drive out to it and back downtown. Their burgers are fantastic, but don't get one which is too crazy it doesn't allow the meat flavor to come through. Like once I had a BBQ which had BBQ on the burger and while tasty, a plain old burger with cheese and the usual suspects (bacon) is the cat's meow.

Thanks Mike, the link is useful.

We are fans of Dale Chihuly and will be heading down for the glass instillation in the Biltmore Gardens soon. I also have reservations for the Beer Geek tour at Sierra Nevada. A fun twofer.

If you are out at SN and like slightly sweet cider there is Bold Rock also at Mills River. Not as pretty as their place in Virginia, but nice and quiet and just a few minutes down the road from SN. I like their ciders, especially their hopped version.

We had a nice couple of days in Greensboro.  I was impressed with the number of breweries within a small, walkable area.  We made it to McCouls, Nattie Greene’s and Joymongers and had burgers at Hops Burger, after a bit of a wait.  It’s a nice little town with a good beer culture.

It was not like that a few years ago. About all that was available was Natty Greenes and Mellow Mushroom. I should have warned you Hops Burger can be a pain to get a table. Hope you enjoyed the burger!

The burger was very good and the wait was expected, since we had a table for 7.
