MOUNTAINS APARTPERHAPS THE STARREST contrast in growth between the coastal and inland counties lies in the Southern Region of the state. Curry County on the coast has seen little change in population and, in Coos, its northern neighbor, the number of residents has declined slightly since 1995. Douglas and Josephine counties, by contrast, grew 3.2%. And with 6.2% growth in Jackson, anchored by the city of Medford, the county ranked 32nd fastest-growing metropolitan statistical area in the nation in 1998.
